The government is preparing plans to ensure cultivation of crops with less water, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said.
Stating this while speaking to newsmen at the Somasila dam after releasing the water to Kandaleru reservoir, he added that the Somasila project would be developed as a tourism place as the site was very attractive. He said that the Somasila dam, Penchala Kona (waterfalls) Mypadu beach, Kandaleru (reservoir) would be grouped together and developed as a  tourist circuit in the district.
While flaying the erstwhile Congress government in the then unified AP for destroying the morale of the officials, he said that was the reason for the delay in the ongoing relief operations in the rain / flood-hit district.
Expressing  satisfaction over the present situation in Chittoor and Kadapa districts,  which were drought-prone till recently, he said that all the tanks and reservoirs in the two districts were now filled with water and added that the same would be useful for the farmers in the near future.
He assured that the pending works of Sangam and Penna Barrages would be completed at the earliest and that water would be supplied to 16 lakh acres for irrigation needs in the district.
The Chief Minister also announced that water would be given to the second crop in the district. He said that the government would use modern technology to minimise the devastation caused by future cyclones and droughts.
He said that the state government had sought `1,000 cr from Centre as advance flood relief aid for immediate relief and rehabilitation operations.
Noting that the recent heavy rain/floods had caused a loss of `3,000 cr the present floods in Nellore, Chittoor and Kadapa districts as per preliminary estimates, he added that the final damage/loss report would be sent to Centre soon.
He said that Nellore district had received 85cm rainfall in five days, which was the highest in the last about 50-60 years. He said plans were afoot to link Krishna and Penna rivers.
