India ended South Africa's resistance soon after tea on Day 5, registering a massive 337-run win at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi to clinch the series 3-0 on Monday (December 7).
With a 3-0 result, India will now climb two positions to no. 2 in the ICC Test Rankings.
Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers resumed South Africa's second innings from their overnight score of 72 for 2. Ravindra Jadeja struck early, dismissing the South African skipper with the new ball. However, the Indian bowlers found it tough to get through the defences of de Villiers. de Villiers stood at the crease like a stonewall, scoring at a strike rate of just a shade over 10, with his partner-in-defence Faf du Plessis doing a fine job at the other end.
Faf, who consumed 53 deliveries to get off the mark, stuck in the middle for nearly two hours, blocking nearly every ball along with his partner to revive South Africa's hopes of salvaging a draw. However, once he was trapped before his stumps by Jadeja, and Ashwin dismissed Duminy five overs later, the game was all but over for the visitors.
Five wickets down at Tea, South Africa would have still given themselves an outside chance of drawing the game but Umesh Yadav's reverse swing and pace troubled the lower order as he accounted for three tail-enders in as many overs. Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for the home team, registering his 16th five-for in an innings where the batsmen had dropped anchor right from the start.
For a series where the talk was centred around doctored pitches, ironically enough it was a straight delivery, left alone by Morne Morkel which ended South Africa's resolute defence.
